Weekend Recap: 2nd Place in the Collegiate Crossfit Games

So my weekend was great! On Saturday I competed in the Collegiate Crossfit games because my school (UNC) was hosting it.  Now, I don’t do crossfit because I disagree with a lot of their training methodologies, but I decided to compete because I can’t resist a competition.

I did crossfit for about a month this spring but I don’t go anymore.  I’d rather do my own thing ;)

Anyway the competition lasted from 10am-3pm.  It was a lot of fun and I met a bunch of really cool people.  The event was bigger than I expected it to be but still pretty small.  The organizer hope to make it much bigger next year.

There were students from UNC, ECU, UVA, Duke, NC State, Elon, and Pfeifer!

There were 3 WODs we had to complete and everyone was split up into 5 or 6 heats.  Points were awarded according to how well you performed in your heat.

The first WOD was just max poundage for overhead squats.  We got to pick any weight we wanted to OH press and we just had to get as many reps as we could with our hips past parallel.  It seemed smarter to pick a lower weight and do a bunch of reps than to pick a heavy weight and only knock out a few so I went with 55lbs and managed to get 36 reps.

The 2nd WOD had 2 parts.  Part 1 was an 8 minute AMRAP of 50 yard sprint, 10 forward rolls, bear crawl the rest of the way, and then 50 yard farmer’s carry (2 40lb dumbbells for men, 2 25lb dumbbells for women).  Part 2 was max 3 touch-and-go cleans.

I HATED Part 1.  The forward rolls killed me because I am super prone to motion sickness so I got really disoriented and nauseous very quickly.  I went as long as I could but I had to stop early.  I figured that I should stop so I could be able to complete the cleans.

For the cleans we had 3 minutes to clean as much weight as we could 3 times in a row but we couldn’t rest with the bar on the ground and we couldn’t adjust our grip (sound unsafe to anyone??) I hadn’t cleaned in awhile so I started with 88lbs and got that really easily.  Went up to 98lbs - again pretty easy.  I have 30 seconds left so I go for 103 lbs and nail it!

The 3rd WOD was 25 pushups, 50 squats holding a 25lb bumper plate, 25 overhead lunges with the bumper plate, and then a 400m run with the bumper plate.  (Guys had 45lbs).  I owned this WOD.  I was the first girl done by at least 30 seconds I think.

I ended up taking 2nd place for the girls.  I think the 1st part of the 2nd WOD really screwed my score but oh well.  I was so mad that forward rolls were in the WOD because you don’t have to be strong to do those, just coordinated and not queasy.

I had lots of fun though! Next time I do crossfit will be next year and the next collegiate game lol.  Maybe I’ll win then! :D

Oh and here’s a pic from the games. We are doing pushups and I’m in the middle in the UNC blue shirt:

Today

Had a great day today

  • Got some chores done
  • Workout warmup - 2 sets X 80 yard prowler pushes with 20lbs
  • Vertimax jumps - to work on my hops. Did 2 sets x 6 jumps with elastic bands and 1 x 6 with no bands. Vertimax jumping is pretty hard. My vertical leap isn’t so great so I’m going to fix that ;)
  • Got up to an 85lb clean. I thought I could do more but it wasn’t in the plan for today.
  • Worked on my Jerk
  • Worked on my pull - specifically hitting the bar against my quad and then shrugging it up
  • Squats - 3 sets of 5
  • Barbell lunges - 3 sets of 8
  • Kettlebell swings - 3 sets of 12
  • Did the Gauntlet: 40 yard sprint, 15 pushups, 40y sprint, 15 situps, 40y sprint, 10 burpees, 40y sprint, 20 pushups, 40y sprint, 20 situps, 40y sprint, 15 burpees, 40y sprint, 15 pushups, 40y sprint, 15 situps, 40y sprint, 10 burpees, 40y sprint

And now I’m going to go eat! I love working out with MashElite

1st Exam Completed! Running Again! And Better Pullups!

Today I had my first exam and I think it went really well!

Tonight I went for a run and it was my first run in awhile since my shinsplints.  The shins felt pretty good today, no pain and running felt awesome.  It was weird running again after taking several weeks off. I can’t really explain it, it felt so nice and liberating!   I ran up this beast hill on Raleigh Rd and my quads were burning and I was nearly gasping when I got to the top.  It was a glorious way to finish a run!

Then I went to the Student Rec Center to get my strength on!!  I hadn’t been to the SRC to lift weights in several weeks because I’ve been doing crossfit instead. But now that crossfit is over, I decided to go.  First thing I did was pullups.  I used to do assisted pullups with a weight that allowed me to do 3 reps.  Today I was able to take off 8 pounds from the assist, meaning I was lifting 8 more pounds of my body weight!  It was awesome! I felt so strong and I am that much closer to doing a full body-weight pullup.  :D

I then made up my own quick 10 minute high intensity workout by pulling exercises from previous crossfit workouts.  My WOD was 3 rounds of:

  • 10 burpee clean and press
  • 20 lunges (10 on each leg)
  • 20 weighted v-ups

I used 2 15 pound weights for all of these except the v-ups, for which I used 1.  I’ll have to use 20lbs next time.

Good day! Now to study for my Geology Exam tomorrow!!

Wish me luck! :D

Bike N’ Beast

Today I did another cycling ride followed up by crossfit.  I ran for about half a mile today and felt pretty good but my shins are throbbing a little right now so I don’t think my shin splints are completely better yet.

I rode 22 miles with an average of 16 mph, which I’m pretty happy with considering it was very hilly.

The crossfit WOD was:

WOD: AMRAP in 15 minutes (I used a 25lb weight for all of these)

20 side lunge and touch
10 burpee clean and press
5 in and out pushups

I saw my friend Lisa on the soccer field doing sprints with some of the ultimate frisbee players and jokingly invited her to crossfit but I was so surprised when she said yes.  She didn’t even know what it was and she said she would come “As long as it doesn’t involve running.” haha. She’s awesome.

This was a tough workout. My deltoids are really tired so I expect them to be sore tomorrow.  I’m really sad that tomorrow is the last day of crossfit for the semester. :(

Crossfit n00b

Yesterday I went to my first ever Crossfit!

It was great! And tough! We warmed up with jump squat turns, 100m fast run, and plank walk-ups.

Then we did a 20 minute WOD, which consisted of stadiums with pushups at the top once you get to the end of the stadium, lunges and bear crawls along the straightaway of the track, and dips at the start of the stadium. Anddddd repeat.

I got through that 3.5 times, which I felt was pretty good. Most of the guys were ahead but they were better at the pushups and dips.   I think I did better than they expected me to do. I love when that happens. :)

Might go again today if I have enough energy by the end of the day.
